If you hold one of the Delta co-branded credit cards that comes with a Companion Certificate, we have some pointers to help you get the most value from that potentially lucrative benefit. Despite the airline’s lack of an award chart to help you plan travel, there is still value to be found in Delta SkyMiles. In this post, we’ll tell you how to use the Delta Companion Certificate.
What is the Delta Companion Certificate?
The Delta Companion Certificate can be used to book a round-trip ticket for a companion traveling on the same itinerary for just the cost of taxes and fees charged, up to $75. The Companion Certificate is issued to eligible Delta cardholders every card anniversary.
Which cards have the Companion Certificate and how do I find it?
The following Delta credit cards are eligible for the Delta Companion Certificate:
This perk can make the annual fee on these cards more than worth it, because taking a second person along on the same flight can otherwise be expensive.
It also can be easy to forget you have this perk, as it is tucked away in your SkyMiles account. To get there, do the following:
- Log on to delta.com.
- Go to My Delta.
- Click on “Credits and Certificates” in the “My Wallet” box.
- Select the available Certificate and click “Continue.”
- Search for eligible flights and book your trip.
Are all Companion Certificates created equal?
No. It depends upon which card’s Companion Certificate you are using. If you are using the pass from eligible Platinum cards, it’s only valid on Main Cabin fares. If you are using the pass associated with one of your Reserve credit cards, the Companion Certificate can be used for domestic first class, Comfort+, or Main Cabin fares.
How do I redeem the Companion Certificate?
Log in to your account and navigate to ”My Wallet” and “Credits and Certificates.” You can also enter your certificate information on this page.
Does the Delta Companion Certificate have any restrictions?
The Delta Companion Certificate can’t be used on basic economy fares, and tickets can only be booked in fares L, U, T, X, or V. Not all flights have availability; be sure to book early as these are some of the lowest Delta fare classes and among the first to sell out.
Both travelers must be booked at the same time and on the same reservation. Your associated Delta co-branded credit card must be used to pay for the primary ticket, and travel must be reserved and completed by the expiration date on the certificate. If either ticket is canceled, the other will be as well.
Finally, the Companion Certificate is only valid on round-trip tickets. One-way and open-jaw flights are not eligible.

Will both travelers earn miles and any related elite status perks?
Only the primary ticket will earn miles for travel. However, the primary member and companion are both eligible for any relevant seat upgrades based upon the Medallion member’s status.
Can the companion traveler benefit be shared with someone else?
The Delta Companion Certificate can be used to book airfare for any two travelers, but the ticket must be paid for using the cardholders’ Delta card. The cardholder does not need to be one of the travelers. This means that if you can’t use it, be sure to share your certificate with a family member or friend before the expiration date.
